The

Story

Video presentation of the joint proposal by David Chipperfield Architects, SJB and Jane Irwin Landscape Architecture for the Adelaide Contemporary Art Gallery in southern Australia. The film not only documents the organic collaboration between the three practices as they construct the maquette of their proposed design. Through a series of intimate close-ups, we witness moments of creative friction—hand-drawn sketches erased and redrawn, material debates over timber grain versus concrete mullions—that remind us great architecture rarely emerges without a little healthy disagreement. Interspersed with candid voice-over reflections, the narrative reveals each firm’s distinct design philosophy: Chipperfield’s minimalist poise, SJB’s urban-driven pragmatism and Irwin’s landscape-first sensitivity. More than a straightforward “making of,” the film becomes a critique in miniature: a testament to how visionary ideas take shape only when discipline, dialogue and a dash of doubt collide.
